In Tübingen, where I was born
The first words I ever heard were spoken in tenderness and warmth to me
And a few years down the line, I learned how to reply
Later on, I learned I was born a foreigner
German in the kindergarten, German in the library, German in the supermarket line
Had to learn German as though it had always been mine
Today I’m a fully integrated woman
But when I try to express gentleness and care
I can’t help but slip into my mother tongue
I love in a language I don’t even speak that much
English for feelings
French for Romance
German for every day talk
After all these years, Russian is still the language of my love.
